Easy returns

December 29, 1999

Returning merchandise after Christmas is everyone's least-favorite chore.

But now the US Postal Service is making it more convenient for the millions who shopped online this year.

Many Web retailers are participating in a program called Returns@ease.

When a customer needs to return an item, he contacts the retailer via the Web. The participating merchant provides an online, postage-paid label that the customer prints out from his home computer and affixes to the package for return.

The package can then be given to a mail carrier, dropped in a collection box, or taken to a post office, expediting the return.
