World Peace Bell rings in 2000

December 29, 1999

Weighing in at 33 tons, it's the world's largest swinging bell. And it will be a ringing success in Kentucky on New Year's Eve.

The World Peace Bell rang in France for the first time earlier this year and has since carried its message of peace to dozens of communities across the US.

"It's so big ... it took over four weeks to get it out of the mold," says James Verdin, president of the company that cast the bronze bell.

The bell will be housed in a special pavilion in Newport, Ky.
