Fitting kids' shoes

August 4, 1999

If you've always wondered how much leather you should be pinching when buying your child's shoes, here are some hints about finding a good match.

*Buy shoes for fit, not by size. Sizes vary greatly among brands and styles.

*Have both feet measured, and fit the shoe to the larger foot.

*Be sure there are no wrinkles on the top of the shoe near the toes when the foot is bent.

*There should be about 3/8 to 1/2 inch beyond the longest toe to the end of the shoe.

*The shoe should fit snugly around the heel with a minimum amount of slippage.
