Top places for retirement

May 19, 1999

Traditional Sun Belt areas such as Florida and California are being supplanted by the Rocky Mountains and the desert Southwest as the best places for retirees to live.

"Retirement Places Rated," now in its fifth edition (MacMillan, $21.95), offers a look at the changing needs and desires of baby boomers heading into retirement. The study says retirees are evaluating communities based on cost of living, services, and cultural opportunities, not on leisure activities alone. The Top 5 areas:

1. Ft. Collins-Loveland, Colo.

2. Charleston-Sea Islands, S.C.

3. Henderson-Boulder City, Nev.

4. Wickenburg, Ariz.

5. St. George-Zion, Utah
