Day in Deep Summer

July 22, 1998

The forecast ... hot.

At Farmers' Market, in waxy still life:

cucumber, purply eggplant, red pepper.

Local melons stacked in mountains

get the daily ration of thumps

and shakes. In the distance,

the park fountain is a tree of cool glass

among maple and willow.

Day reaches its peak

of ripeness:

you gather prolific backyard squash

and water furrows around tomatoes.

When you reach to pick

the Red Haven peaches, large globes of heat

drop into your palm.
