On Elm Street

December 10, 1997

The dove-gray buildings

in my New Haven winter

huddle the center green.

Hands plunged deep into

pockets, people march,

necks drawn into collars

of blue and red ski jackets.

Glinting rays of December sun

rebound off the United Church's

Colonial windows, and I pause,

untouched by chilling winds

to gaze at the recently erected

tree.
