Accompaniment, Handel on an Autumn Evening

October 24, 1997

Tell me the trees don't move

with Water Music long after

the strains are silent,

that they repeat only wind

and a science of movement

as winged forms carry daylight

into leaf shadows, and from somewhere

a staccato grammar of night birds

connects to us like the speech

of cousins we know about

but haven't seen.

Do you think this scarlet sunset -

vivid across a manna of motion

and sound - marks only

the requisite elements?

Devotions aired under tabernacle sky

hallow with music the works of many.
