Even if Unseen

August 15, 1997

There are places

where people,

widely separated

still "speak" to each other,

even if unseen,

by whistling across a canyon

or ravine.

There are people

who pledge their lives

to each other,

like the bride and groom

at a Cherokee wedding

who clasp hands

across a running stream,

to signify that

from this time on,

their lives will always

flow together.

And there are those

who build bridges

in mid-air

and even if,

at times, unsure

that these are strong enough

to bear what they must bear,

or if the structure

is really there -

cross without fear.
