Day and Night

July 2, 1997

Comfortable,

as if in a cocoon,

a woman sways

in a hammock

surrounded by

hanging purple lilacs;

a Cleopatra,

in a dove's wing,

with dangling grapes.

I lounge

with my feet up

on my desk,

acting like her

all day long;

until the full moon

is echoed by

my big toe,

poking through

the hole

in my black sock.
