Dandelion Campaign

May 1, 1997

The fuzzy yellow button-heads

crop up in my lawn:

I set the mower lower,

chop and vacuum up their charm.

Then I work below the ground,

slicing off the root:

four evenings on my hands and knees

the grass-stain is a beaut!

Sometimes I yield to chemicals

though I'm not overfond

of powders, sprays, or caustic-kiss

applied by magic wand.

But usually I surrender....

coming home each day

to find that all my plottings

merely turn them gray.
