Love Lines Along the Years

How Shall We Love?

February 14, 1996

A ship in a harbor is safe, they say,

but it's not where ships were built to be.

O how shall we love as our days run on

and all the voyaging is done?

Now here on the shore of our marriage - see

the sweetheart lingers as the clown!

The summers in you still entreat

warmth to my winters, and each noon

beckons to where the late wave's lunge

will josh away our cares.

We think to wait in our love's long light,

to rest where the morning smiles are blown.

But the sea breaks over us - crest after crest

of laughter - a new voyage begun!
