How Her Garden Grew

February 13, 1996

My mother liked to tell

about the string beans -

how Grandpa laughed the first

time she planted them. Seems

when they poked their tender heads up

to see the world, she pushed them back

into the earth again. But they,

like my mother's daughters,

would not go unheeded -

and once they made clear to her

who they were, she made sure

they got what they needed -
