The Anonymous Rocks: Autumn

October 30, 1995

Notice they are dull now

in dry colors - powder brown

and sugared gray, subdued mahogany.

The streambed low after heat,

you turn stones over and over in your palms:

They are like a summer dreaming

left behind, warmed layers

that can seep a calm

into your hands.

When they shone and flecked the waters

with their clear to silty shapes,

evergreens leaned at the edge

and wavered across.

They keep that story deeper now

under the soft roof of the forest.
