Inlet: Off the Coast Highway

October 20, 1995

A cellophane light crinkles

the water's horizon. At the cove,

I climb upward over boulders: gulls flock

bright sand below me,

wind clustering their cries.

Chokecherry, greenbrier, and cypress aroma

layer shadows: madrona and black oak,

a high, wind-gnarled screen

of cypress and pine,

gray moss dripping silence

hung from the green.
