WORTH NOTING ON TV

July 28, 1995

* SATURDAY

Abbott & Costello Meet Jerry Seinfeld (NBC, 10-11 p.m.): It may be a far cry from tubby Lou Costello's bumbling comic persona of the past to slender, modern Jerry Seinfeld. Yet there does seem to be a bit of Costello - the high-pitched tone of frustration, for instance - in the star of the TV season's top-rated series.

So Seinfeld makes an appropriate host for this tribute to the classic comedy team. The program recaps Abbott & Costello's legendary career (yes, their famous ''Who's on First'' is included). Glimpses of their personal lives are captured through never-seen home movies.

* SUNDAY

The USA Basketball

Selection Show (NBC, 5:30-6 p.m.): It's safe to say that the Dream Team - the nickname of the United States' Olympic basketball squad - will romp again next year in Atlanta, as they did in 1992. The NBA stars making up the new team will be announced in this special. Some will be interviewed, including Lenny Wilkens, the Dream Team's coach and the all-time winningest coach in NBA history.

Iron Will (The Disney Channel, 7-9 p.m.): Even before Jack London's novel ''The Call of the Wild'' and its film incarnations, dog sledding has been a natural for action stories - especially when it involves a race. And this 1993 film, receiving its TV debut, is no exception.

Set in 1917, the story involves a young man, played by MacKenzie Astin, whose father dies and leaves his family in debt. The young man decides he must enter a 522-mile dog-sled race to win the money prize, and his success in his initial race earns him the nickname ''Iron Will.''

* TUESDAY

Sniper (Fox, 8-10 p.m.): The 1992 feature film about two marksmen tracking down right-wing villains in the jungles of Panama is making its bow on TV. Tom Berenger stars as a superbly skilled but conscience-torn Marine sniper whose partner is a government agent (Billy Zane) with lots of bright ideas but little field experience.
