As the Water

July 26, 1995

As the water arced out

from the hose end

across the yard, a hummingbird

darted down to hover

near the stream, which I held

as steadily as I could,

as he twitched in the air

closer and closer. Finally,

he rose and vanished,

deciding in favor of prudence,

as so many of us do

on so many occasions

less tense than the stream

blasting from a hose

thicker than the waist.
