As I Sweep

July 6, 1995

As I sweep the patio

the invisible spoon of the wind

restirs the dirt. It has

a genius for dispersion

as I desire to concentrate.

It may be relied upon

to disperse milkweed seeds,

riding their entrepreneurial journeys

to new places to sink and root.

And so these opposite tendencies

interplay in the world -

concentration and dispersal,

sorting and retangling -

for trash and thought

I prefer concentration.
