WORTH NOTING ON TV

May 26, 1995

* SATURDAY

The American Film Institute Salute to Steven Spielberg (NBC, 10-11 p.m.): Director-producer Spielberg is being given the AFI's Life Achievement Award, reserved for a handful of the most important names in movie history. In the past it has gone to people with the stature of John Ford, James Cagney, Alfred Hitchcock, and Orson Welles.

Spielberg, the 23rd recipient and the youngest, has legendary credits, of course, including the 1993 best-picture Oscar-winner ''Schindler's List'' and some of the biggest hits in film history -- from ''Raiders of the Lost Ark,'' to ''E.T'' to ''Jurassic Park.''

At this edition of the annual event, taped March 4, two-time best-actor Oscar-winner Tom Hanks presides over an impressive list of celebrities.

* SUNDAY

Indianapolis 500 (ABC, 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m., EDT): Yes, 4-1/2 hours is a long time to watch cars go round and round, but even casual fans may want to tune in and out of auto racing's biggest event.

National Memorial Day Concert (PBS, 7:30-9 p.m., EDT): A little hoopla, a feeling of old time holiday in the town square, some good music -- it's all part of this annual event aired live from the grounds of the United States Capitol in Washington.

It's about the only place on national TV where you can hear a lineup of bands like this: the US Army Herald Trumpets, the US Army Chorus, the US Navy Sea Chanters, the Armed Forces Color Guard, and members of the US Army Chorale. They join the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Erich Kunzel.

Some of the music will be mixed with archival footage, dramatic readings, period music, letters, and other material in a salute to World War II veterans, who are marking the 50th anniversary of the conflict's end.

Ossie Davis is host, joined by several figures from show business and the military.
