WORTH NOTING ON TV

July 28, 1994

* FRIDAY

Alive TV (PBS, 3:30-4 p.m.): One of the more unusual and sometimes refreshing formats offered on TV these days is this magazine show featuring short films from a range of sources. A new edition of the program includes ``Memories of Home,'' a look at race relations in England as experienced by a young woman and her family recalling her African past.

There's also an animated feature - ``A Little Routine'' - that considers the thoughts of father and child when it comes time to go to bed. Bedroom furniture has a nightlife of its own in ``When I Was Six.'' And the insatiable curiosity of people in general is dealt with in a short production called ``Door.''

ABC in Concert (ABC, 12:06-12:36 a.m.): Next month's 25th anniversary of Woodstock approaches - along with a new concert in memory of that historic three-day rock-and-roll event in a field in New York State. That makes this as good a time as any for another look at Michael Wadleigh's high-grossing, Oscar-winning, sometimes explicit 1970 documentary recording the event.

This version of ``Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music,'' is Wadleigh's own ``director's cut,'' so far released in theaters only in New York and Los Angeles. It includes material not seen in the original version - items like new Jefferson Airplane numbers; a Crosby, Stills, and Nash rendition of ``Wooden Ships''; Janis Joplin singing ``Work Me Lord''; and a new cut of ``Voodoo'' by Jimi Hendrix.

Many other rock numbers will be offered, sometimes by performers who were almost legends then and definitely are now.

Ancient Mysteries (A&E, 10-11 p.m.): A good-sized TV screen would help in getting the full effect of this visually ambitious program - ``The Northern Lights'' - about the aurora borealis. But even without a large screen, it's an irresistible subject. The 1992 Canadian film not only gives viewers an eyeful of this dazzling cosmic display, but samples mankind's explanations of it - from tribal myths to modern scientific theories.
