It's Possible

December 31, 1993

THE telephone rang. When I picked it up, a little voice said, ``It's possible!'' At first, because the words were so surprising, I was caught off guard and I didn't realize that this was my two-year-old niece. I felt as though I was being given a much-needed divine message.

I had been feeling discouraged about an unfair situation at work that wasn't quickly yielding to prayer. The voice on the phone repeated, even more enthusiastically, ``Auntie, it's possible!'' By this time I realized that this was my niece and that she was referring to the song ``Impossible'' in her favorite movie, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, which points out, ``Impossible things are happening every day.'' I laughed and questioned back, ``It's possible?'' And she said again, ``Yes, it's possible.'' My sister took the phone at that point and said my niece had asked to call. We talked for a few minutes. After hanging up, though, I thought some more about how I'd first identified the phone call--as a message from God.

I certainly didn't think that things were possible in the way that the movie portrayed, with fairy godmothers and magic wands. But I knew that Christ Jesus' promise ``With God all things are possible'' (Matthew 19:26) solidly affirmed that all good is possible with God. My niece's words, reminding me of that promise, shifted my point of view very quickly and naturally from discouragement and hopelessness to expectation and joy. I hadn't realized that I'd gotten so discouraged, but the phone call alerted me to the feeling of hopelessness about the situation I'd allowed to settle in my thinking. I'd been feeling that things were impossible, and those words, ``It's possible,'' reminded me of what I already knew about God's all-power. His is the only power, as the Bible affirms, and there can't be a situation outside of His control. There can't be a force capable of resisting His government. Unhappiness and inequity simply don't have any place in a universe where God fills all space and governs all. How could I be stuck in a pattern of unhappiness, since God, good, is truly governing me and all in my office?

This shift of thought came so quickly and easily because I'd already had ample proof of the infinite possibilities that flow from God's presence and power. I have always turned to Him with my difficulties and have had consistent healing results, whatever the apparent discord was. So the reminder from my niece, so appropriately timed, was enough to wake me up and restore my trust in God.

Instead of continuing to allow my thinking to dwell on what appeared to be wrong, I naturally found myself thinking about the situation in terms of God's law of good. Since God is perfect and all-loving and all-powerful, everything and everyone in His universe reflects His justice, harmony, and perfection. From that point on I was able to reject all of the discord I'd been seeing at work as unreal because discord just couldn't exist in the spiritual creation, which reflects God's good government. And although it was some months before the situation at work was resolved, the discouragement never returned. I was able to face each day with hope and joy, and I saw consistent progress take place until a happy resolution came about.

Jesus thoroughly proved in his career of healing and teaching that all things truly are possible to God. He saw man as God's child, perfect, sinless, whole. He was able to see beyond what was outwardly apparent, to spiritual reality. And this healed! His words and works pointed to rules, or laws, that can be applied effectively to heal every kind of disease or inharmony. These laws are elucidated by the Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She writes of the divine Principle of Christian Science: ``This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, `God with usthe sovereign ever-presence, delivering the children of men from every ill `that flesh is heir to''' (p. 107).

Because God's tender, loving presence is with us at all times, we can have confidence and trust. We can start each day knowing that it will bring goodness and progress. God's will for His children is completely good. He loves us, guides and supports us. He created us to express Him. Our entire experience is governed by God; it actually emanates from Him. So, if you've been feeling discouraged, helpless, or hopeless about anything, if you've had difficult challenges to face, get rid of those doubts and fears. It is possible.

BIBLE VERSE

And one of the multitude answered and said,

Master, I have brought unto thee my son,

which hath a dumb spirit....

And ofttimes it hath cast him

into the fire,

and into the waters, to destroy him:

but if thou canst do any thing,

have compassion on us, and help us.

Jesus said unto him,

If thou canst believe,

all things are possible to him that believeth.

And straightway the father of the child

cried out, and said with tears,

Lord, I believe;

help thou mine unbelief.

When Jesus saw that the people

came running together,

he rebuked the foul spirit,

saying unto him,

Thou dumb and deaf spirit,

I charge thee, come out of him,

and enter no more into him.
