A Fond Farewell To Summer
Southward Wings
September 30, 1993
The talk in the thicket is all of summer now,
how it is fading from the bough.
Birds are pressed by urgencies
of leaves turning red and falling. Song frees
itself of flowers and starts to rise.
Wings shift gold and silver light
southward, leaving more room for night.
