A SAMPLING OF UNITED STATES STUDIES COURSES

February 3, 1992

The University of the Americas (UDLA) started Mexico's first master's degree program in United States studies in 1987. Though the program has only six graduates, 20 students are now enrolled. The program is designed to prepare graduates for PhD level studies at a US university or to be able to consult in private or public sector on US policy. The ability to read, write, and speak English is a prerequisite.

The following courses are completed in the first year:

US History 1 and 2

US Government and Political Process

US Economic History

US Ideology and Thinking

US Society 1 and 2

US Foreign Policy

North American Economy

US Scientific and Technological Development

Candidates then select a major and minor area of specialization. They must complete research projects relating to these two areas and complete a master's thesis in the major area of specialization.
