Drawbridge Petals

June 6, 1991

The drawbridge of the rose opens and a way

is made for the sun's ray

to canter up! It goes

along petals, bright

as glittering armored night!

To this unromantic world,

a castle is unfurled

stamens with turrets, gold

and beckoning, where a bee

makes a minstrel melody

until the day is told ...

And then the petals close ...

The traffic of the sun

and honeyed song are rung

out again. The rose

is drawn up and made tight,

a fortress for the night.
