Always Employed by God

WHEN what you have always counted on as a secure job suddenly comes to an end, or a company you had planned to spend your career with no longer needs you, you don't have to despair. The challenge may seem immense, but there's a higher source to turn to for help, and that help is totally dependable. The Bible tells us that God is Love.1 He never ceases to love His children and to supply their needs. This is spiritual reality, the truth of God and man for eternity. The need is to prove this truth, to demonstrate right where we are that God does care for man.

As we pray to Him for guidance and open our thought to a higher sense of our creator and of ourselves, we can feel that tender caring, and we will be guided by Him into areas of activity that will continue to bring fulfillment and satisfaction to our lives.

It's so easy to think that we personally possess certain abilities which we use in our work. We have these great ideas, designs, inventions. Yet if Christ Jesus could say, ``I can of mine own self do nothing,''2 surely this goes for us too.

As God's child, man actually reflects all the ability, wisdom, beauty, intelligence, inherent in the divine nature. Man, made in the image of God, reflects God, expresses His being. This capacity is unlimited. It can never be worn out or used up. Our abilities are never made redundant or rejected by the Father. Actually, man is employed by God to serve Him, and we fulfill this purpose whenever we use our God-given talents.

If we are suddenly faced with unemployment, it's a good time to ask God to show us what to do. A time to stop and pray, to gain a feeling of peace, a realization that under His government all will be, and in fact already is, well. It's a time to listen quietly for God's loving guidance. God is the all-knowing Mind. Our vision of where to go and what to do may be limited, seeing only the obvious, but God's knowledge is infinite. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, ``Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts, even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose in order that the purpose may appear.''3

It's easy to be afraid for ourselves and our families when we don't know how bills will be paid or where the money for the next mortgage payment will come from. But we can trust God to take care of each one of His children and to supply their legitimate needs. God would not have given man the gifts of intelligence and ability without also providing him with the opportunity to employ these talents. As we express them, we are serving and glorifying God.

Even when things seem hopeless, God is there to guide and help. His divine law, supplying man's every need, supersedes human theories, which would always put limits on our opportunities.

As we pray to understand more of God's consistent love for His children, we will see this love proved in our experience. Times of unemployment can be times of inspiration as we learn more about the Father's shepherding care. We can include in our prayers all who have lost their jobs, for the same divine law applies to everyone. No one need suffer, but each can prove divine Love's care at every stage of experience.
