FRIDAY Tales From the Hollywood Hills (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): ``Great Performances'' premi`eres series of three glitzy dramatizations of short stories by John O'Hara, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Budd Schulberg, chronicling the post-flapper foibles in the '30s. AIDS: Changing the Rules (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): Ron Reagan is featured in a documentary, and Judy Woodruff is moderator for a panel aimed at building awareness among adult heterosexuals of concerns related to the AIDS epidemic.

SATURDAY The Paper Boy (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): ``Wonderworks'' family drama about depression-era Australian boy who becomes sole support of his family. Footsteps (Arts & Entertainment/cable, 9-10 p.m.): Fabulous archaeological series that visits major digs of the world. This week, the Mayan metropolis of Tikal in Guatemalan Yucat'an.

SUNDAY Billionaire Boys Club (NBC, 9-11 p.m.; also Mon., 9-11 p.m.): Bizarre drama based on the true story of scary yuppie crime.

MONDAY The Gods Enslaved (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Second in David Attenborough's series on the natural and cultural history of the Mediterranean. Bedtime Story (PBS, 10-10:30 p.m.): Spalding Gray writes and stars in ``Trying Times,'' part of series of original drama-comedies on coping with life's changes.

TUESDAY Volcano! (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): ``Nova'' investigates how scientists predict eruptions. Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story (ABC, 9-11 p.m.; also Wed. and Thurs.): Lush, corny, pseudo-historical romance starring Armand Assante and Jacqueline Bisset. Clues (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Fourth of six-part series, ``The Ring of Truth,'' about the inner workings of science poaches on David Attenborough's territory, the Mediterranean.

WEDNESDAY Showdown on Tobacco Road (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Documentary on the various conflicts caused by the evidence indicating that cigarettes are a definite health risk. The Divided Union (Arts & Entertainment/cable, 9-10 p.m.): Premi`ere of five-part documentary series on the events leading up to the Civil War. Sgt. Pepper: It Was Twenty Years Ago Today (PBS, 9-11 p.m.): The flavor of 1967 through reminiscences with and about the Beatles.

THURSDAY John Quincy Adams: Secretary Of State (1817-1825) (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Eighth segment in repeat of prize-winning early-American series, ``The Adams Chronicles.''
