Artificial intelligence: Computer technology concerned with capturing distinctly human capabilities - analyzing problems, recognizing patterns, and reacting appropriately to unique situations. Computer vision: An area of AI research attempting to give computers the ability to understand visual images.

Expert systems: A computer that contains knowledge about a particular field and emulates the reasoning processes of human experts.

Knowledge engineering: Describes the building of expert systems.

Natural language processing: An area of AI research attempting to allow people to communicate with computers in natural languages such as English.

Robotics: An area of AI attempting to develop intelligent robots.

Speech generation: AI research concerned with generating humanlike speech from alphanumeric text.

Speech recognition: AI research that attempts to allow computers to understand human speech.

Symbolic processing: A type of computer programming based on the manipulation of symbols representing concepts in a problem.
