The Robert Klein Show (USA/cable, 9-10 p.m.): A new talk show with a literate humorist as host. SATURDAY

Bye Bye Kipling (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): Avant-garde variety show includes everything from Philip Glass concert in the United States to Asian Games from Korea. SUNDAY

Out of the Fiery Furnace (PBS, 7-8 p.m.): First of seven shows tracing the development of civilization from Stone Age to Space Age.

There Must Be a Pony (ABC, 9-11 p.m.): Drama about a faded film star with mental problems stars Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Wagner.

The Last Frontier (CBS, 9-11 p.m.; also Tuesday, 9-11 p.m.): Linda Evans plays a widowed mom in the Australian outback.

Witness to Apartheid (PBS, 10-11 p.m.): Documentary, filmed in secret, presents testimony of witnesses to police violence in South African townships. Focus is on apartheid's impact on children. MONDAY

A Fight for Jenny (NBC, 9-11 p.m.): John Michael Vincent co-stars with Lesley Ann Warren in an emotionally draining tale of racial intermarriage and a custody battle. TUESDAY

Faces of Japan (PBS, 8-8:30 p.m.): First of 13-part series presenting modern Japanese society through portraits of individuals. Dick Cavett is host.

American League Playoffs (ABC, 8 p.m.): Angels vs. Red Sox.

The Nature of the Continent (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Premi`ere of ``The Africans,'' a nine-part personal view by Kenyan professor Ali A. Mazrui. WEDNESDAY
