Reagan renews plea for El Salvador military aid

President Reagan said Saturday a ''rising tide of communism'' threatened to engulf El Salvador and move closer to the United States if Congress did not quickly approve more military aid for the Salvadorean government.

Reagan's comments were the latest and strongest in his campaign to win quick congressional approval of $61.75 million in military aid to protect Salvadorean elections, and another $116.25 million later this year.

Reagan initially pressed Congress to approve $93 million for El Salvador before Sunday's election.

Last week, however, Reagan agreed to a plan by Senate Republican leaders reducing the request to $62 million in hopes of speeding congressional approval.

Sen. Daniel Inouye (D) of Hawaii will offer the compromise amendment during the debate on the Salvadorean aid bill Tuesday of Wednesday.
