This change in the merchandise trade deficit, when spread among the various areas of the world, was accounted for as follows (an improvement occurred only in trade with the OPEC countries): Canada -$7.57 billion Western Europe -$12.14 billion Japan -$4.08 billion Latin America -$21.39 billion OPEC +$21.44 billion Other developed countries -$1.80 billion Developing countries (non-Latin America) -$8.42 billion
