The town of Woodbury, Conn., provides the perfect backdrop for a midwinter New England outing that combines history and antiques with downhill and cross-country skiing.

Situated in Connecticut's picturesque Litchfield County, Woodbury's Main Street is lined with 18th- and 19th-century houses and churches open to the public. Glebe House welcomes visitors Saturday through Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. Scattered around the center of town and throughout the surrounding countryside are about 30 of the state's finest antiques shops.

The center for sporting activities is the Woodbury Ski and Racquet Club, a year-round recreation center with downhill and cross-country skiing, paddle tennis, and ice skating. There are low downhill rates ($11 for adults), and 60 miles of free cross-country trails. Also for cross country skiing or just walking, the nearby Flanders Nature Center provides a 1,000 acre wilderness sanctuary open during daylight hours.

There are many old inns in Connecticut, but the oldest and one of the most charming is the Curtis House on Main Street in Woodbury. In operation since 1754 , the Curtis House has 18 rooms, many furnished with antiques and four-poster canopied beds. The dining room, which is open to the public for lunch and dinner , features a large seafood selection. For reservations and information, call the Curtis House at (203) 263-2101.
