Christian in a Muslim land

Reporters on the Job: Before heading out to report for today’s story on Christians in Qatar, I called for a cab to take me out to “Church City,” as the site designated for churches in Doha is known colloquially.

When I told the driver where I was going, he seemed pleased, and he reached around to the seat pocket in the back to pull out a huge colorful book about Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

Apparently, he keeps it there for the reading pleasure of his riders.

When we got to the site, and I asked how much he’d charge for waiting while I went in for an interview with his pastor, he said, “Nothing. No charge. I’m Christian.”

It was his way of saying: “I’m pleased that you’re visiting my church.”
