Jones Beach, Early Autumn

A poem.

Jones Beach, Early Autumn

  The families have crossed
 the summer portal,
 leaving the rocky edge
 washed clean,
water table set for us with broth
of kelp tangles, mussels, razor-edged clams,
 scent of generously salted earth.
I plant my feet in cool
 depths of sand to watch
 the tide inch back
 home again.
