Hold Your Horses

A poem.

September 2, 2011

Hold Your Horses Hold your horses, people,
let them not sleep
alone in stables,
nay, instead,
bring them inside
to tables, to red
sofas and recliners.
For these knob-kneed
outsiders work hard being
your metaphors:
your work horse,
your thoroughbred
put out to pasture
when no longer fast, your
black beauty in the face
of disaster, a
flicker of hope
at the end of your tether –
your way out,
the only one,
loping together
toward the setting sun.
