Review: 'Motherhood'

Uma Thurman plays a harried urban parent in this light comedy.

Uma Thurman looks frumpy in "Motherhood." This is the only pressing reason to see it. Usually she looks goddessy, even in movies where she is not playing a goddess, so it's nice to know she can also come across like a mere mortal. Playing Eliza, a harried mother of two in New York's West Village, Thurman is immensely likeable, and so is Minnie Driver, playing Eliza's best friend. But too much of this comedy, written and directed by Katherine Dieckmann, seems like a pilot for a sitcom – a so-so sitcom. Eliza is a compulsive blogger, and the film follows one day in her harried, multitasking life. I'm not pining for Day 2. Grade: B- (Rated PG-13 for language, sexual references and a brief drug comment.)
