The rule of thumb for how much moisture plants need is an inch a week. But the amount of rain that falls at the official measuring station for your area and what falls on your yard often vary -- especially in summer with frequent scattered showers. Know exactly how much rain your yard receives by putting up an inexpensive rain gauge. Then water accordingly.
