Don't mulch too soon

If you live in a cool-weather climate, don’t mulch around your warmth-loving vegetables – from tomatoes to melons to pumpkins -- until the soil has warmed up. Spreading an organic mulch too early will keep the soil chilly and prevent veggies from getting off to a fast start.
