Spy-in-the-sky robocop

There could soon be a new cop patrolling the Florida Everglades from hundreds of feet above the trees. Miami police say they will test drive a MAV, micro air vehicle, to snoop around the swampland and help fight crime in remote areas that are hard to monitor on foot, according to a Reuters report.

After taking off, MAV hovers 500 feet above the ground and can blast up to 10,500 feet. The 14-pound pilotless drone zips around at more than 50 miles per hour and captures real-time video from its two cameras – one pointing down and another facing forward. The information is transmitted to a ground station, where police can control the bot and send for backup. Once it’s landed, the 22.5-inch drone, designed by Honeywell International, fits into a backpack.
