Internet gaming in the US: If it were legal, what would be the effects?

A bill to legalize Internet gambling in the US was approved Wednesday by the House Financial Services Committee. A pending bill in another committee would set a tax on anyone in the US who wins money online. Estimates of tax revenues vary as do predictions of increased problem gambling and other social costs.

Some say online gaming would be a net positive, while others forecast little revenue to offset such possibilities as gambling addiction among youth.
