Online discussion forums: Should websites make readers use real names?

June 28, 2010

An interesting piece in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine examines the cost of allowing anonymous postings on Internet discussion forums. "After years of letting anonymity rule online," the article states, "many media heavyweights, from The Washington Post to The Huffington Post, have begun to modify their policies. The goal is to take the playground back from anonymous bullies and give greater weight to those willing to offer, in addition to strong views, their real names."

What do you think? Should more websites – from travel review sites to blogs – insist on real names, or is anonymity an important part of the Web's open format that's worth preserving?
