I am currently re-reading Travels with Herodotus by Ryszard Kapuscinski. I really enjoyed this travel/commentary book from the pen of a Polish reporter who simply asked for an assignment beyond the borders of Poland (he was hoping maybe for Czechoslovakia) and instead was sent to India, China, Iran, and Africa, along with a gift of Herodotus' "Histories." Throughout the book, Kapuscinski draws parallels between Herodotus' travels and findings with his own journey. He also muses on the meaning of freedom, and the repetition of strife and struggle in our current history compared with that of the ancient world.
