The Cairo House, a novel by Samia Serageldin, is an engrossing account of one woman's coming-of-age in a politically prominent land-owning Egyptian family. Her father's sequestration under Nasser parallels her own exiles abroad to escape a failed marriage. Ms. Serageldin opened my eyes to a vibrant, complex culture and framed my understanding of current events in a thoroughly familiar and engaging context.
