Canadian environmentalist and prolific author Farley Mowat’s autobiography of his childhood, Born Naked, took me to the 1930s, near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I kept wondering if any parent in 2010 would permit an adolescent to spend days alone observing birds and animals at 40 degrees below zero in the wilds.
