J.R.R. Tolkien did not live to see the publication of his grandest work, The Silmarillion. In it, he lays out the creation myths and history of his fantasy universe, only a part of which included Middle Earth. Its deep parallels with the Old Testament make one rethink all the foundational literature of the West.
