Adopted Son: Washington, Lafayette, and the Friendship that Saved the Revolution

October 4, 2008

Lafayette used to be a dim historical figure for me, but not anymore. I just finished Adopted Son: Washington, Lafayette, and the Friendship that Saved the Revolution by David A. Clary. The prologue describes young Lafayette, come to be a soldier in the American Revolution, sleeping on the ground next to General Washington after the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse on June 28, 1778. The books ends with Lafayette’s death in 1834. In between is the story of the love and affection between George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette, a friendship like no other.
