Enlightenment for Idiots

June 3, 2008

Enlightenment for Idiots by Anne Cushman is one part escapist page-turner, one part insight into yoga and Buddhist philosophy, one part tall tale of travel in India, and five parts vivid witty writing that had me laughing out loud. I rooted for Amanda, the main character, but my favorite was Devi Das, a redheaded truth seeker who always refers to himself as “we.” A delightful first novel from this seasoned essayist.
