For pop's survivors, a trip to the state fair

Fairgrounds boast bands that time, and the pop charts, forgot. REO Speedwagon is still around – who knew?

Chris Daughtry is playing a whole series of state fairs in a kind of "American Idol" victory lap. But at a stop in North Dakota in July, the fresh-faced singer crossed paths with the craggy visages of Def Leppard.

Indeed, fairgoers all around the US can find plenty of acts they probably thought had been consigned to their old cassette collections. At the "Wonders of Oregon" expo in Salem, for example, they can hang around to hear the driving riffs of Heart's "Barracuda," live, one more time. Here's a look at some of the bands that time, and the pop charts, forgot on the state-fair circuit.
