Baking Memories

December 11, 2006

I search my cache of recipes
retrieve the familiar folded sheet
crease lines perforate with age
Layers of buttery fingerprints
have turned the page to parchment
My mother's script paled by time
chronicles the confection
I listen to the cadence of
Bing Crosby's drummer boy
while the oven crisps the cookies
intoxicates my mind with vanilla
I taste my childhood Christmas.
