Cardinal Song

I heard a cardinal singing
one of his twenty-one variations
on a theme by Paganini
penetrating the closed deck doors
in early morning
But when he came at dusk
and heard me on the piano
playing Schiller's "Ode to Joy"
he added a descant to his repertory
in deepening darkness.
