Is it all right to walk on that frozen pond?

February 8, 2006

Use this chart to determine whether it's OK to walk or ride on ice. These figures apply to ice that covers large bodies of nonmoving water such as ponds or lakes. Be extra careful when going onto rivers and streams where ice is usually 15 percent weaker than pond or lake ice.

The ice on rivers and streams may look thicker than it really is because moving water wears away ice from underneath.
