Girl at sixty-five

June 30, 2003

In some far corner of her mind,
waiting to be remembered sits
the girl who wants to dance
the night away. Sometimes gaiety
blindsides her at weddings.
She wants to go with it.
Sometimes the Muzak at the supermarket
can get the humming going.
Today on Aisle 5 she heard "Moon River"
playing. (It conjured the Junior Prom and their whole
laughing table.) She la-la'd along with it.
The coast then clear of carts, she sang
"You heart breaker," softly, but out loud.
